  • Taxonomic revision of Sinoeugnathus kueichowensis from the Middle Triassic of Guizhou and Yunnan, China

分类: 生物学 >> 生物进化论 提交时间: 2024-03-15

摘要: The previously alleged ‘eugnathid amiiform’ Sinoeugnathus kueichowensis is asmall-sized halecomorph from the Middle Triassic (Ladinian) marine deposits of Guizhou andYunnan, China. A morphological redescription and taxonomic revision of this taxon are providedbased on a detailed examination of 15 new specimens. Among them, IVPP V24315 (standardlength = 64 mm) is appointed as the neotype, given that the holotype is missing. Studies of thesespecimens revealed some morphological details previously undescribed or misidentified forthis taxon, including a hatchet-shaped antorbital, two broad suborbitals, a sensory canal in themaxilla, and three pairs of extrascapulars. For the first time, Sinoeugnathus was incorporatedinto an analysis of halecomorph phylogeny, and the results recover it as the sister taxon of theAnisian Subortichthys from Luoping, Yunnan, and both are grouped with two Ladinian generaAllolepidotus and Eoeugnathus from the Monte San Giorgio area into a monophyletic group(namely Subortichthyidae fam. nov. herein) at the base of Ionoscopiformes. This taxonomicreassessment of Subortichthys provides new insights into the phylogeny and paleogeographicevolution of Ionoscopiformes.

  • A new species of Pteronisculus from the Middle Triassic (Anisian) of Luoping, Yunnan, China, and phylogenetic relationships of early actinopterygian fishes

分类: 生物学 >> 动物学 提交时间: 2021-05-20 合作期刊: 《古脊椎动物学报》

摘要: Actinopterygii, the largest group of extant vertebrates, includes Cladistia, Actinopteri (Chondrostei plus Neopterygii) and closely related fossil taxa. The extinct genus Pteronisculus belongs to a stem lineage of actinopterygian fishes represented by 11 species from the Early Triassic of Madagascar, Europe and North America, and a single species from the early Middle Triassic of China. Here, we report the discovery of a new species of this genus, Pteronisculus changae, on the basis of five well-preserved specimens from the Middle Triassic (Anisian) marine deposits exposed in Luoping, eastern Yunnan, China. The discovery documents the second convincing species of Pteronisculus in the Middle Triassic and the largest stem actinopterygian fish in the Luoping Biota, having a maximum total length of up to 295 mm. The new species possesses a toothed lacrimal, which is characteristic of Pteronisculus, but it is easily distinguished from other species of the genus by some autapomorphies, e.g., a medial process at the middle portion of the intertemporal, 21 supraneurals, and 83 lateral line scales. The results of our cladistic analysis provide new insights into the relationships of early actinopterygians and recover Pteronisculus as a sister taxon of the Carboniferous rhadinichthyid Cyranorhis at the actinopterygian stem. Based on the body form, teeth and other features, it can be deduced that Pteronisculus changae is likely a relatively fast-swimming predator, feeding on planktonic invertebrates and smaller or younger fishes known to occur in the same biota. As one of the youngest species of the genus, the new species provides additional evidence to suggest that the diversity of Pteronisculus is higher than previously thought and that the eastern Paleotethys Ocean likely constituted a refuge for species of this genus during the early Middle Triassic.

  • Phylogenetic and morphological profile of Cladophora fracta (Cladophorophyceae, Chlorophyta) from karst spings, in northern China

摘要: Cladophora fracta, a filamentous green macroalgal epiphyte on rhodoliths, is described from five karst springs in North China. Although Cladophora species frequently appear in karst system, their genetic diversity, biogeographical affinities and physiological properties have not been well investigated in these environments. The specific objectives of this study were to: 1) describe the habitat of the Cladophora-like algae form the five karst springs; 2) identify the thallus to species level based on a combination of morphological characteristics and molecular sequence; and 3) explore the morphological influence of habitat. To elucidate the biogeographical patterns in Cladophora, both morphological and molecular evidence were compared of Cladophoraspecimens across five study sites. Analyses of partial small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) genes revealed that the studied 50 Cladophora specimens were genetically identical species and a total of 13 ribotypes were detected. The molecular sequencing results indicated that the examined species was highly homologous with Cladophora vagabunda, though they shared few morphological features. The genus didn't form a monophyletic clade but in three different clades both in SSU and LSU trees. The microscopic structure was more consistent with that of C. fracta. The Cladophora from the five karst springs did not show significant variation in cell dimensions. However, the species exhibited larger cell diameters than those reported from lakes. In addition, the rhizoid-like branches are only observed in two locations (XA and ST). Considering the morphological characteristics, we therefore hold our species as Cladophora fracta.

  • Dentition of Subengius mengi (Mammalia: Plesiadapoidea) and a reassessment of the phylogenetic relationships of Asian Carpolestidae

分类: 生物学 >> 动物学 提交时间: 2017-11-07 合作期刊: 《古脊椎动物学报》

摘要: New fossils pertaining to the oldest known Asian plesiadapiform, the Gashatan carpolestid Subengius mengi, clarify aspects of the dental anatomy of this taxon. The dentition of S. mengi is substantially more primitive than previously recognized in retaining a lower dental formula of 2.1.3.3, a low-crowned p4 with three main cusps that are less fully connate than their counterparts in species of Elphidotarsius, P3 with a narrower and structurally simpler lingual margin, and in lacking widely splayed paraconid and metaconid on m1. The unique structure of P3 in S. mengi and a reassessment of P3 anatomy in Elphidotarsius sp., cf. E. florencae, suggest that certain cusp homologies on P3 in Carpolestidae have been misinterpreted in the past. Following a detailed character analysis, the phylogenetic relationships of carpolestids and their close relatives are reconstructed. The Bumbanian taxon Chronolestes simul is recovered as the most basal member of Carpolestidae. S. mengi and a second Bumbanian taxon, Carpocristes oriens, also appear to be relatively basal members of the carpolestid radiation, although none of these Asian carpolestid taxa seems to be specially related to each other. Dispersal of carpolestids between Asia and North America appears to have been restricted to earlier parts of the Paleocene, although carpolestids survived on both continents until sometime near the Paleocene–Eocene boundary.

  • Taxonomic revision of lizards from the Paleocene deposits of the Qianshan Basin, Anhui, China

分类: 生物学 >> 动物学 提交时间: 2017-11-07 合作期刊: 《古脊椎动物学报》

摘要: Although the Late Cretaceous lizard fauna of China and Mongolia is relatively well-known, information on Paleocene lizards from the same region is currently limited. Several species of lizards have been reported from the Paleocene Wanghudun and Doumu formations of Qianshan Basin on the basis of fragmentary specimens, namely Agama sinensis Hou, 1974, Anhuisaurus huainanensis Hou, 1974, Anqingosaurus brevicephalus Hou, 1976, Changjiangosaurus huananensis Hou, 1976, Qianshanosaurus huangpuensis Hou, 1974, and Tinosaurus doumuensis Hou, 1974. In this paper, we review all the reported material of these taxa with the aid of new technology, including CT scanning, and according to current views of squamate relationships and classification. Revised descriptions and classifications are given for each taxon, leading to changes in our understanding of faunal composition. This, in turn, reveals greater morphological and ecological diversity among the Paleocene lizards of the Qianshan Basin, including the occurrence of a varaniform (IVPP V 22767), and the reinterpretation of Anqingosaurus as a possible burrower. Further work on the Paleocene Qianshan lizards is ongoing and the discovery of new specimens may help to solve the puzzles these strange lizards have posed.

  • A new ionoscopiform fish (Holostei: Halecomorphi) from the Middle Triassic (Anisian) of Yunnan, China

分类: 生物学 >> 动物学 提交时间: 2017-11-07 合作期刊: 《古脊椎动物学报》

摘要: Ionoscopiformes, sister to Amiiformes, are an extinct group of halecomorph fishes previously known mainly from the late Middle Triassic (Ladinian) and Late Jurassic of Europe and the Early Cretaceous of the New World. They have not been known in China until recently two ionoscopiforms (Robustichthys and Panxianichthys) were found from the early Middle Triassic (Anisian) of Yunnan and Guizhou, respectively. Here, a new ionoscopiform, Subortichthys triassicus gen. et sp. nov., is described on the basis of six well-preserved specimens from the early Middle Triassic (Pelsonian, Anisian, ~244 Ma) marine deposits exposed in Luoping, eastern Yunnan, China. The discovery documents the second ionoscopiform from the Luoping fossil beds and one of the oldest ionoscopiforms in the world, providing important information for understanding the origin and early diversification of this group. Subortichthys is an unambiguous halecomorph as it possesses two synapomorphies of this clade: a symplectic articulating with the lower jaw and a notched posterior margin of the maxilla. Within the phylogenetic framework of the Halecomorphi, results of the phylogenetic analysis place Subortichthys at the base of the Ionoscopiformes because it bears a sensory canal in the maxilla (an ionoscopiform synapomorphy), but lacks derived features of other ionoscopiforms. Notably, Subortichthys is distinguished from other members of this order with a unique combination of features, such as presence of three or four pairs of extrascapulars and a much expanded third infraorbital posteriorly contacting the preopercle. The new material reveals that the earliest diversification of ionoscopiforms was well undertaken in South China (a part of east Paleotethys Ocean then) by the early Middle Triassic (Anisian).
